"One of the reasons Tunick is so prolific in Britain is because he has run into trouble with New York's authorities. In this country, "indecent exposure" stopped being an offence in 2003, to be replaced by the Sexual Offences Act, which allows for public nudity. What is banned is threatening behaviour. This explains why flashing – a phenomenon almost killed off by the internet – is still illegal; skinny dipping is not."

A psychologist at Warwick University, Dr Martin Skinner, says we are taught to be ashamed of showing our genitals in public by our parents. He said naturism could be viewed as a type of rebellion. He said: "It's a psychological release from normative constraints. We all like to rebel a bit. Naturists feel clothes constrain them psychologically and physically."
